Most of these images were created in the 2D Design class taken through Cerro Coso Community College. I have given private art lessons in which I focus on the many things I learned from this course, and previous education on the Elements and Principles of Design. This knowledge has proven to be most useful. I have learned that there are 'rules' to art, just as there are theorems in mathematics.  I discovered that I have a natural tendency to follow the rules of design, even before I had a knowledge of them.  I have often heard the exasperated statement from fellow student's, "Why do I need to know this stuff, it's just art, isn't art about breaking all the rules anyway?"  Well, if you don't know what the rules are in the first place, how can you break them?  And I have also discovered that most of those individuals who felt they were 'breaking' the rules, actually were subconsciously adhering to them. I myself have seen a definite improvement in the design and quality of my artwork since learning to incorporate design elements into my art.

I have learned a lot about the Elements and Principles of design in my years of schooling, and have found ways and have seen how I use them in my daily life and work.  From color combination to developing page layouts that use space effectively and in a manner pleasing to the eye, I constantly go back to my training in the use of the design principles.
